Perinatal Mental Health Disorders

Pregnancy or Postpartum (OCD)

  • Pregnancy or Postpartum Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (PPOCD) involves intrusive, unwanted thoughts or mental images (called obsessions) that can feel frightening or distressing. Some individuals may also engage in repetitive behaviors or mental rituals (compulsions) in an effort to reduce anxiety or prevent feared outcomes.

  • These thoughts are not a reflection of a person’s values or intentions. People with PPOCD are typically deeply distressed by these thoughts and are very unlikely to act on them. With proper support and treatment, PPOCD is highly manageable..

Anxiety During Pregnancy & Postpartum

  • Pregnancy or Postpartum Anxiety (PPA) can involve excessive worry, fear, or constant “what if” thoughts, often centered on the health, safety, or well-being of the baby or parent. Anxiety may feel persistent and overwhelming, even when everything appears to be going well.

  • Some individuals experience panic attacks, which can include symptoms such as:

    • Shortness of breath

    • Chest tightness or pain

    • Dizziness or lightheadedness

    • A sense of losing control

    • Numbness or tingling sensations

These experiences can be frightening, but they are treatable and common during the perinatal period.

Postpartum Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

  • Postpartum Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PPTSD) can develop after a traumatic or frightening childbirth experience, medical complications, or in the context of past trauma that is reactivated during pregnancy or birth.

    Symptoms may include:

    • Intrusive memories or flashbacks related to the birth or trauma

    • Intense emotional or physical distress when reminded of the experience

    • Avoidance of reminders of the birth, medical settings, or related situations

    • Heightened anxiety or feeling on edge

PPTSD is a real and valid response to trauma, and compassionate, evidence-based treatment can help individuals feel safe, grounded, and supported again.

We have received specialized maternal mental health training from Postpartum Support International to help support this population.
